PURPOSE: To reduce surface defects generated by hot rolling in a slab, at the time of continuously charging a slab into a soaking furnace and discharging the same therefrom and executing heating by a burner system, by prescribing the varying range of the concn. of oxygen in the atmosphere in the furnace. CONSTITUTION: At the time of executing heating by a burner system while a ferritic stainless steel slab is continuously charged into a soaking furnace and is discharged therefrom, the varying range of the concn. of oxygen in the atmosphere in accordance with the charging and discharging of the slab is suppressed within±0.5%. For suppressing the furnace temp. for the purpose of suppressing the varying width, the kind of gas may suitably be changed, and as for preferable heating conditions, the heating temp. preferably regulated to 1150 to 1300 deg.C, the heating time is regulated to >=60min and the concn. of oxygen in the atmosphere is regulated to 0.5 to 1.5%. Thus, the generation of linear surface flaws called as linear scabs in hot rolling can efficiently be prevented.
