A discharge valve for a hydrodynamic brake connected to a press to brake the rapid movement thereof on sudden breakage of a workpiece has an adjustable biased closure member 10 of substantial mass and a seat 9 connected to move with the moving crosshead of the press so that on breakage the closure member initially remains stationary while the seat rapidly moves away therefrom. The adjustable bias thereafter determines the pressure in the braking cylinder during operation.</p> |
