The steering column has struts to support the jacket tube on vehicle body bearing sections. One or more struts (5) extend in crosswise direction of the vehicle, and at least one of these has a separation point (7). During a crash, the strut is divided into several sections (5a, b) at this point. An additional strut section may be fastened, e.g. glued, to the strut at the separation point. The strut is tubular, and separates when it is under a certain load. The separating point has a weaker material configuration.
