The bed has a base mounted on castors (2) with a top connected to it by a height adjustable frame. The castors can be brought to a first position (position O) in which they can freely rotate and to a second position (position B) in which they are braked and prevented from moving. A motor (34) is provided which moves the castors from the one position to the other. At least one of the castors can be brought to a third position (Position G) where it can rotate freely but where its direction is fixed. The castors can also be controlled manually.
