The invention relates to a process for operating a guided vertical chill, especially for casting steel, which is run in oscillation by a lifting device. According to the invention, the driving force (F), the lift position (x) and/or the lifting speed (v) of the chill are measured, a chill lifting movement is preset in a computer model as a reference and finally a difference in the lifting movement of the chill, representing the amount of frictional force between the casting shell and the chill, is taken via a circuit to actuators as a control value. The invention also relates to a continuous casting device for carrying out the process.
