Silver halide (AgX) emulsion contains tabular AgX grains, with an aspect ratio of at least 2, which comprise at least 50% of the projected surface area of the entire emulsion. An inner zone of the grains, comprising at most 50 mole-% of the emulsion, is doped with Se. Pref. the aspect ratio is 5-20. AgX is AgBrI or AgBrClI with up to 15 mole-% AgI and up to 20 mole-% AgCl. The emulsion esp. is a core/shell emulsion, in which the core contains more AgI than the shell. In particular, the coated grains have a core of AgBr contg. less than 5 mole-AgI, Se-doped layer(s) contg. 10-40 mole-% AgI and a shell of AgBr contg. less than 2 mole-% AgI. An organic Se (II) cpd. is used as dopant in an amt. of 10<-9> to 10<-3> mole Se/mole total Ag in the emulsion.
