Programming system for vehicle electronic key

The electronic key 4 of a road vehicle is programmed with owner and vehicle specific data as a protection against theft. The programming is achieved over a data transmission link, e.g. a telephone line, between a service station 1 and the remotely located central station 20 that is a vehicle manufacturer facility. The key is entered into a programming unit 3 and receives data over a link 15 from a terminal 2. The data is decoded 6 and stored in memory 8. The central unit provides individual coded information 18 from a data bank 21 and this is transmitted to the programming unit. Requests are made for this code over a secured transmission 10 line.
