Dichloracetyl chloride - by oxidation of trichlorethylene in the presence of an amine salt

Title product (I) is prepd. by oxidising trichlorethylene (II) under IV light in the presence of an aliphatic amine (pref. 2-8C) or an ammonium salt (pref. HCl). The reaction is effected in one stage without preactivation of (III) and without evolution of heat. Technical (II) contg. up to 1% water may be used. Thus (II) oxidised with O2 at 50-80 degrees C under UV light in the presence of isoPr-NH2HCl gave after 30 and 57 hrs. 97.0% and 99.6% (I) contg. 2.5% and 0.1% (II) resp. Using iso-PrNH2 (free base) no reaction had taken place after 30 hrs. (I) are intermediates for insecticides.
