PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal display device which is high in contrast and is bright in display without increasing production stages by providing a first substrate with light shielding bodies together with display electrodes. CONSTITUTION: The first substrate is provided thereon with first electrodes 2 consisting of tantalum. Further, the first electrodes 2 are provided thereon with nonlinear resistance layers consisting of tantalum oxide formed by subjecting the first electrodes 2 to an anodic oxidation treatment. These nonlinear resistance layers are provided thereon with second electrodes 4 consisting of metal chromium or indium tin oxide(ITO) which is a transparent conductive film. Nonlinear resistance elements 5 of a thin-film diode structure are formed of the first electrodes 2, the nonlinear resistance layers and the second electrodes 4. The second electrodes 4 are connected to display electrodes 6 consisting of the ITO. The light shielding bodies 20 are formed of the tantalum which is the same metal as the metal of the first electrodes 2 on the peripheries of the display electrodes 6. The partial regions of the light shielding bodies 20 are arranged in superposition on the lower parts of the display electrodes 6. |
