<p>PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a raw material for new epoxy resins capable of providing a cured material excellent in heat resistance and dimensional stability and useful also as an epoxy resin curing agent, etc., and excellent in homogeneous curing property. CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [X is formula II (R<1> and R<2> are H or a 1-4C alkyl)], e.g. 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(4-hydroxybenzyl) biphenyl-4,4'-diol. The compound is obtained by reacting 3,3',5,5'- tetrahydroxymethylbiphenyl-4,4'-diol with a phenol compound of formula III in the presence of an acid catalyst (preferably hydrochloric acid). Furthermore, 3,3',5,5'-tetra-hydroxymethylbiphenyl-4,4'-diol is preferably obtained by reacting biphenyl-4,4'-diol with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst. An alkali such as NaOH is preferably used as the basic catalyst and formalin is preferably used as formaldehyde.</p> |
