PURPOSE: To suppress the incorporation of spacers into pixels and to obtain a display element which is high in contrast and is free from a rough feel by forming insulators as means for maintaining the spacing between a pair of substrates outside the pixels. CONSTITUTION: A pair of the substrates 101a, 101b formed with transparent electrodes 2a, 2b on glass substrates 1a, 1b are used. The first insulating layer 10a consisting of a black resin layer dispersed with black pigments is patterned and formed outside the pixels on the one substrate 101a. The second insulating layer 10b consisting of an insulating material formed by incorporating plastic beads into a negative photoresist is patterned and formed outside the pixels. A liquid crystal cell is produced by sticking the substrates 101a and 101b to each other. A polymerizable resin material, liquid crystal material, etc., are injected into this cell and the resin is allowed to cure. Liquid crystal regions 3 enclosed by high-polymer regions 4 are obtd. in a monodomain state at every one pixel. The disturbance in the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules by the spacers in the pixels does not arise. |
