PURPOSE: To easily obtain in high yield a benzylthiazolidindione derivative useful as a raw material for medicines and agrochemicals, etc., by hydrogenating a berizylidenethiazolidindione derivative in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula II is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each H, OH, a 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxyl, or being combined into methylenedioxy) while keeping it in a liquid state in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. Raney nickel) under a hydrogen pressure of 1-100kg/cm<2> at 0-100 deg.C. The amount of the catalyst to be used is 1-1/1000 pt.wt. based on the compound of formula I. The compound of formula 1 can be easily obtained by dehydrating condensation between the corresponding benzaldehyde derivative and thiazolidin-2,4-dione. The compound of formula I is e.g. 5-(4- hydroxybenzylidene)thiazolidin-2,4-dione, while the compound of formula II is e.g. 5-(4-hydroxybenzyl)thiazolidin-2,4-dione. |
