Paper surface sizing properties of aqueous solutions of high molecular weight (at least 100,000 Daltons weight average) styrenemaleate half ester polymers are improved by forming the maleate half ester using oxyalkylene-alkyl alcohol, preferably 2-(n-butoxy) ethyl alcohol.
