PURPOSE: To attain in-gear control to a back range smoothly and speedily by composing engagement operation control of frictional engagement elements for setting specified transmission stage when shifting from a neutral range to a back range is conducted of a plurality of control stages. CONSTITUTION: First to third planetary gear lines G1 to G3 are parallely arranged on a transmission input shaft 3. Transmission stages are set by engagement/disengagement between clutches CL1 to CL3 and brakes B1, B2. In such a device, a shift lever is changed over from an N range to an R range. At that time, an engagement condition of frictional engagement elements for specified transmission stage is sensed when shifting is conducted sequentially, that is, N-D-N-R. A control stage for starting control of the frictional engagement element for the specified transmission setting is selected according to the sensing result. Control of the frictional engagement elements for the specified transmission stage is started from the selected control stage, for executing transmission control to the R range. |
