<p>PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound being a powdery compound not having adhesiveness and tackiness at an ordinary temperature, capable of providing a new phenol novolak compound by reaction with various phenolic compounds and useful also as a curing agent for epoxy resins. CONSTITUTION: This compound is 3,3',5,5'-tetrahydroxymethylbiphenyl-4,4'-diol of the formula. The compound is obtained by reacting 1mol of biphenyl 4,4'-diol with 1-5mol, preferably 1-2.5mol of formaldehyde (preferably formalin) in the presence of a basic catalyst (preferably an alkali such as NaOH) in water or a mixed solvent of water with an organic solvent and preferably neutralizing the resultant reaction product with hydrochloric acid and further purifying the neutralized product. The reaction is preferably carried out at 30-50 deg.C for 4-16hr.</p> |
