PURPOSE: To produce a high performance ferroelectric liquid crystal element which is capable of suppressing a moving of a liquid crystal and in which yellowing is prevented. CONSTITUTION: The moving of the liquid crystal in the ferroelectric liquid crystal element depends strongly on a substrate interface, that is, a physical state of an orientation controlling film surface, and the moving of the liquid crystal is suppressed remarkably when an area in which the orientation controlling films 14a and 14b are not incorporated in at least one side substrate of a pair of substrates 11a and 11b of the ferroelectric liquid crystal element occupies 5-40% of a display area in a picture element. That is, by making such a constitution, the moving of the liquid crystal is suppressed and the yellowing is prevented. |
