The time when a synthetic lift cable (5) has to be replaced is determined by including electrically conducting carbon indicator fibres (19) among the strands of aramid fibres which make up the layers (13,14,16) of the cable. The carbon indicator fibres (19) have a lower extensibility and a lower fatigue strength in bending than the aramid fibres (20).
