This invention pertains to the microbiological industry, namely micro organism selection and utilization to obtain citric acid by means of the surface fermentation method from sugar cane molasses. By way of selection, the Aspergillus niger base R-5 is obtained. The producer is cultivated in the nutrient medium containing sugar cane molasses (13-19% of sugar) under the surface fermentation conditions for 9-12 days. The citric acid output is 80-85% of the sugar content in the nutrient medium. The citric acid content of the total amount of acids is as high as 95-99%; the oxalic acid content is 0-0.5%. The productivity of the producer seed grain amounts to 0.7-1.0 g of spores from 1 dm<2> of the surface of the sporulation nutrient medium. This invention makes it possible to enhance the efficiency of the citric acid production from sugar cane molasses.
