PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having high coercive force and generating low noise at the time of reproduction by successively forming an underlayer having a prescribed compsn., a magnetic layer, a protective layer and a lubricative layer on a glass substrate. CONSTITUTION: A 1st underlayer 2, a 2nd underlayer 3, a 3rd underlayer 4, a magnetic layer 5, a protective layer 6 and a lubricative layer 7 are successively formed on a glass substrate 1 to obtain a magnetic disk. The underlayers 2, 3, 4 include the 1st underlayer 2 of Al2 O3 formed on the side brought into contact with the glass substrate 1 and the 2nd underlayer 3 of Cr formed on the 1st underlayer 2. The thickness of the 1st underlayer 2 is regulated to 10-100Åand the thickness of the 2nd underlayer 3 is made 2-10 times that of the 1st underlayer 2. The objective magnetic recording medium having high coercive force is obtd.
