PURPOSE: To set a virtual line at the time of a connection with an ATM communication network by using an existing protocol and to communicate information by using the virtual line. CONSTITUTION: A 1st communication terminal 1 sends out an ARP request including an IP address to a network by broadcasting, and a 2nd terminal 2 matching the IP address passes an ARP response to which a MAC address is added to a 2nd ATM terminal adapter 5, which temporarily stores the ARP response (F1 to F4). The 2nd ATM terminal adapter 5 sends a virtual line request to a 1st ATM terminal adapter by broadcasting and an ATM branching device 8 which serves for repeating is specified with interface information from the ATM branching device 8 (F5). After a virtual line request response is passed to the 2nd ATM terminal adapter 5 like the branching device 8 specified at the time of the virtual line request is traced back, the said stored ARP response is passed to the 1st communication terminal 1 (F7).
