PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and compact optical system for full color high resolution projection type display using a reflective double-refracting spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal light valve. SOLUTION: This optical system is provided with reflective double-refracting light valves 26-28, a polarized beam splitter 22, a color image coupling prisms 30-32, a lighting system 18, a projection lens 38, color/contrast control filters 43-46 and a screen 39 arranged in constitution to provide an advantage of high resolution color display. The lighting system 18 is provided with a light tunnel 56 of cross-sectional shape corresponding to the geometric shape of a space light modulator in order to optimize the quantity of light projected onto the screen 39.
