PURPOSE: To simply select a function of the television receiver. CONSTITUTION: A main menu of a uppermost layer of a hierarchized menu comprising items corresponding to functions of a television receiver is displayed to a left side of screen of the television receiver, and when a cursor is moved to a first item 1 of the main menu, while the main menu is displayed on the screen as it is, a sub menu corresponding to the item 1 is displayed to the right side of the screen. Then the cursor is moved to a first item 'item 1-1' of the sub menu. The cursor is moved to a prescribed item in the items 'item 1-1' to 'item 1-3"' of the sub menu and a prescribed operation is applied to the selected item, the item is selected and confirmed.
