The accelerometer uses optical means to determine the displacement of a vibrating component. It has an inertia block (15) fixed to the component and to a main optical element (3). This element is optically in series with another (12) which changes the phase of light from a source, by 90 degrees. The light is polarised (11), at 45 degrees of the neutral birefringent line of the main element. A photodetector receives light output from the optical system and transforms it to an electrical signal. An electronic circuit extracts the out of phase signal part, proportional to its displacement. The main element may be a glass case (1), with part of its base (3) traversed by the light. |
