The optical switch includes an optical transmission medium, a radiation source, and a reflector. The radiation source transmits a primary optical signal through the transmission medium towards the reflector. The reflector converts the primary signal into a modulated, secondary signal and sends it back to a receiver through the transmission medium. The receiver performs a switching operation according to the modulated signal. The modulated signal is pulse modulated. The optical transmission medium is an optical waveguide composed of a single fibre.
