Residues which arise from industrial processes and the burning of rubbish and contain heavy metals and/or heavy metal compunds are subjected to a two-stage reduction process providing re-usable metal and silicon-containing alloys. In a first reduction stage the compounds of silicon and metals having a greater normal potential than silicon are reduced using carbon or carbon-generating agents as reducing agents. After the reduced metals have been separated, the residue obtained, containing aluminium in oxidised form, is transferred to a molten salt bath which is subject to molten electrolysis in a second reduction stage yielding molten aluminium and silicon. The process is particularly suitable for filter residues from rubbish incineration plants.
|
