The franking machine according to the invention includes a non-volatile history memory (FM), and circuits (M1, M2, MR) for registering information into this memory only in the case where at least one of the characteristics of a franking operation differs with respect to the immediately preceding operation. For example, for a series of franking operations having the same value, the history memory (FM) contains just one block of information indicating the franking value common to each operation and the number of operations carried out. The capacity of the history memory is therefore much lower than in the case in which it would store one block of information for each franking operation.
