Gaseous O2 is generated by the melting and thermal decomp. of a solid oxygen carrier. Liquefaction is carried out in a 1st reaction chamber (1), the thermal energy being provided by the reaction of an alkali metal alloy with water. The melt is passed into a 2nd reaction chamber (11) where further thermal energy causes evolution of O2 gas. Liq. alkali metal alloy is fed into the reaction areas separated from the water. A further claim is for an apparatus for carrying out this process consisting of a storage and melt container (1) for the solid oxygen carrier (2), a reservoir (3) for the liq. alkali metal alloy, a reaction chamber (11) to which is connected a cooler and separation unit (14) and a water spray system (15-17).
