A high quality color plotter capable of printing paper or film of at least A0 dimensions. The system has applications in producing output for computer aided design and engineering systems, as well as large format color display output. The system uses a concurrent drop selection and drop separation drop on demand printing mechanism. The printer interprets information supplied by an external computer in the form of one or more page description languages (PDLs) or plotter control languages to create bands of the image in bi-level pixel format. Each image band is printed by the printing head after it has been rasterized. After the band is printed, the next band can be calculated and printed. The speed of the system can be improved by double-buffering the band memory, allowing calculation of the next band to proceed while the current band is being printed. The speed can be further improved by utilizing wider printing heads, up to the full width of the recording medium. |
