Apparatus is described for joining two webs of sheet material to form a laminate, including a reservoir of hot melt adhesive, and means for applying liquid hot melt adhesive to one face of one web supplied to the laminator. The face of the web which is so coated is the face which is to be brought into contact with one face of the other web in a subsequent stage within the laminator. The laminator is located intermediate the opposite ends of a machine at one end of which is located a roll of backing material which comprises one of the webs and at the other end of which is located a roll of peelable material which comprises the other of the webs, whereby the backing material travels towards the laminator from one end of the machine while the peelable web material travels towards the laminator from the other end of the machine. The adhesive applying means may comprise either a slot nozzle apparatus which may include one or more heated rollers for backing support, or an offset arrangement of rollers to coat the web with the adhesive from a suitable reservoir. |
