PURPOSE: To detect the stepping force of a bicycle pedal without using a gear or a link mechanism, and make a body lightweight by detecting the deformation variable of the body corresponding to the stepping force with a load sensor. CONSTITUTION: When a driver sits down on a seat, gravity W acts on a seat tube 3 and further on right and left seat stays 2a and 2b as an equal compressive force P. Also, when the driver steps down a pedal 10, tensionΔT1 acts on the left seat stay 2a, and a compressive forceΔT2 acts on the right seat stay 2b respectively due to chain tension T. In this case, a force detected with a strain gauge 7a is (P+ΔT1 ) and a force detected with another strain gauge 7b is (P-ΔT2 ). A load acting on the pedal 10 is found from the detected forces by use of the prescribed formula. Then, the component force P of the gravity W is subtracted for offset, and an accurate load is calculated, regardless of the magnitude of the driver's body weight.
