PURPOSE: To prevent the deformation of a stainless steel strip and to suppress in- furnace rubbing flaws by confining the temp. gradient change rate of the temp. curve of the stainless steel strip to be subjected to a heat treatment in a vertical type bright annealing furnace and the tension to be applied thereon within a specific range. CONSTITUTION: A stainless steel strip S is passed in a vertical type bright annealing furnace 10 via inlet and outlet side deflector rolls 16, 17, is subjected to heat treatment in a heating zone 13 and cooling zone 14 through a chute 11 and is taken out. At this time, the temp. gradient change rate of the temp. curve of the stainless steel strip S in the arbitrary position in the height direction of the cooling zone 14 and the average tension to be added thereon are confined within the range shown by equation:σt (y)-4.9×10<-2> W.q.E.α>=0 (where y: the height direction position [m] of the furnace,σt (y): the average tension [Pa] at the position of the height y, w: plate width m, q: the temp. gradient change rate [ deg.C/m] at the height y in the up and down direction, E: Young's modulus [Pa],α: coefft. of thermal expansion [/ deg.C)]. As the result, the thermal deformation of the stainless steel strip S is prevented and the occurrence of the rubbing flaws by the contact with the furnace wall is suppressed.
