PURPOSE: To absorb any impact energy to be applied to a steering shaft so effectively at a time when the whole length of this steering shaft is contracted due to a car-crash accident. CONSTITUTION: When an impact in the axial direction is applied to a steering shaft 1a, an inner shaft 10a is thrusted in an outer shaft 9a and thereby the full length is contracted to some extent. At this time, the inner shaft 10a draws an energy absorbing plate 26 inwards the outer shaft 9a. A deforming part 29 is crushed in space between an outer plane 13a of the inner shaft 10a and an inner plane 11a of the outer shaft 9a, whereby impact energy is absorbed as much as for the portion crushed. |
