The present invention provides new and structurally diverse compositions comprising compounds of the general formula: wherein A is N or CR1, R1 is hydrogen, C1-C8 alkyl, or C6-C10 aryl, where the alkyl or aryl group may be optionally substituted with one or more hydroxy, C1-C8 alkyl, C1-C8 hydroxyalkyl, C1-C8 alkoxy, C6-C10 aryl, C6-C10 hydroxyaryl, C6-C10 aryloxy, -CO2R2, -CONR3R4, or NR3R4; R2-R7 are as defined within; g, h, i, j, k and m may be the same or different and are an integer from one to about six; X is -CO2H, -PO3H2, -SO3H or -CONHOH. Methods for imaging including MRI, X-ray and radiation diagnosis using compositions of the invention are also provided.
