The present invention consists of a method and device for comparison of sentences in a language. For a sentence requiring translation the device finds the identical or most similar sentence from the totality of sentences (in the same language) and recovers the equivalent translation from a translation memory. The device compares a sentence to be translated from a source language into a target language using a measure of similarity which defines how similar the two sentences are. The measure of similarity is set by the differences present between the sentences compared. These differences are deletions, additions, replacements or transpositions of words. The measure of similarity is greater when the number of common words and the number of successive common words between the two sentence is greater. After locating the most similar sentence, the device recovers the translation of the sentence from the translation memory. The advantages of the device are its consistent behaviour and its applicability to any language. In this respect the machine is independent of the language. This invention can be applied to the process of translation of electronic texts from one language to another. |
