The device operates by physically destroying regions of the disc surface to destroy data recorded on the disc surface. The physical alteration of the disc is performed by drilling a pattern of holes of less than 0.4 mm diameter in the disc, or alternatively using electrical discharges at controlled locations to form a pattern. The content destroyed is significant, as is the physical location of the holes, in identifying the serial number of the disc. The number is unique for each disc. To form the serial number the disc is driven in rotation by a computer, as is the drilling or electrical discharge head.
