The pressure of a liquid is amplified before the liquid passes through a treatment chamber (1) at high pressure. A low pressure liquid (4) is passed through a pressure amplifier (7) to produce a high pressure liquid stream (8). After treatment the pressure from this stream is recovered (7) and transferred to fresh low pressure liquid. Pressure transference is achieved by a pair of pistons (11a and b) moving alternately within two cylinders (10a and b), dividing them into entry/exit chambers (13a and b) and recovery/evacuation chambers (14a and b), through which the piston shafts (12a and b) pass. The ends of the shafts are linked so the two pistons move together increasing the volume of one entry/exit chamber as the other is reduced and vice versa. A network of pipes and valves lead to and from the chambers so they are filled and emptied as the pistons move. The valves are computer controlled (27). Liquid leaves the system as two low pressure streams, one treated (6), the other not (5).
