TERMINAL OF CRYOGENIC CABLE

PURPOSE: To absorb thermal shrinkage at the time of cooling by employing a mechanism for sliding the cable terminal in the longitudinal direction depending on the measurement of variation in the physical amount incident to thermal shrinkage of the cable. CONSTITUTION: A stress sensor 13 is disposed at the joint of a thermally insulated inner pipe and a terminal and a motor 14 for driving a wheel 3 is controlled depending on the measurement of the sensor 13. In other words, when a cable 2 is thermally shrunk due to cooling, the thermal shrinkage is detected and measured by means of the stress sensor 13. Based on the measurements, a controller 15 operates a movement such that the stress being applied to the cable 2 or the terminal 1 comes within an allowable range. The motor 14 is then driven based on the operated value to move the terminal 1 in the shrinking direction thus absorbing thermal shrinkage. With such arrangement, the terminal 1 can be protected against breakdown.
