The apparatus consists of a centre-medullary rod (26) which is aligned with the lengthwise axis of the femur (1), a cutting guide (21) for the tool used to cut the distal end of the femur transversely, a goniometer (12) to position the cutter guide relative to the lengthwise axis of the femur, and a cutter guide angle regulator (21). The angle regulator forms part of the cutter guide and comprises a curved slider (31), an angular graduation (28), a positioning index (27) and a locking member (30). The slider is designed to permit an angular adjustment of between 70 and 90 degrees, and the cutter guide has a slot (23) to hold a reciprocating saw blade. The goniometer has a tube (25) which fits onto the rod (26), and a plate (14) which moves about an axis (15) perpendicular to the tube to set the angle of the femoral valgus.
