<p>1293945 Cutting machines GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY 27 Nov 1969 [5 May 1969] 58023/69 Heading B4B A machine for cutting designs in a stack of sheet material comprises a blade 18 movable longitudinally and transversely relative to the stack arid a bed 26 of penetrable material. The penetrable bed may comprise either blocks 24 of foamed polystyrene which may be reversed or replaced when worn, a self-healing material, e.g. a superviscous liquid, Fig. 9, verticle bristles, or granular material. The last three materials may have a covering sheet, e.g. of paper. The blade passes through an adjustably positioned pressure plate 42d which may have orifices 55, Fig. 12, for applying pressure on to the sheets 14d, a polythene covering sheet 61 being provided above the sheets. Further the blade may have a sheath 46b, Fig. 9, having an attached plate 52 with orifices 53 for conducting friction-reducing compressed air. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the blade 18 is a reciprocating knife blade rotatable in the direction #, and movable transversely of the sheets by a carriage 16 on rails 34 and longitudinally by a carriage 21 on rails 30, the movements being controlled by e.g. a computer through a line 19. In a second embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown) a rotary cutting tool (60) may replace the blade and in a third embodiment the blade may comprise an endless band entrained over rotating pulleys 90, 92, the pulleys and their motors 98 being mounted on brackets 104, 112 for rotation in the direction # about the bledge edge 96 by motors 114, 116. Beneath the bed of penetrable material 76 are two panels 64 separated by a gap in which the cutter 88 is moved by carriages 120, 128 on rails 122, 130 respectively, the relative longitudinal movement being obtained by a motor 82 having a pinion 84 meshing with a rack 86 fixed to the bed.
