PURPOSE: To prevent inadequate printing in the case where an object obliquely advances by stopping printing in the case where the oblique advance angle of the object is measured and the printing of characters is found not be performed within a printing area. CONSTITUTION: A figure shows the relation of a printing part 1, a paper sensor part 2 and the object. A sensor 5 is positioned on the extended line of the center 4 of the printing position of a printing head and on an upstream side. The sensor 5 detects the length of the object. An interval between the printing head and the sensor 5 is (P+α) in the case where the actual length of character to be printed is defined as P. Whether the length L of the object is enough or not is detected with respect to the length P of the character to be printed, and when the printing is inadequate because the object obliquely advances, the printing is stopped from the beginning. A pair of sensors 6 and 7 for detecting that the object obliquely advances is provided on both sides of the sensor 5. The sensors 5 to 7 are arranged in a line at an interval (x) in a direction crossing at a right angle with the carrying direction of the object.
