PURPOSE: To provide a scanning optical system adjusting device and the method thereof capable of adjusting a scanning optical system in a state where a rotary polygon mirror is rotated. CONSTITUTION: A beam detection part consisting of a scanning timing detection part 105 and a beam diameter detection part 106 is supported to be movable in the optical axis direction of the scanning optical system 100, a subscanning direction orthrognal to the optical axis direction, and a rotating direction around an optical axis by a beam detection part moving mechanism 107. According to output from the detection part 105, a control part 110 moves the moving mechanism 107 in the optical axis direction so as to fix the beam detection part at a reference position for focusing, etc. The beam detection part is moved in the subscanning direction and the rotating direction around the optical axis by the control part 110 through the moving mechanism 107 according to the output from the detection part 106 at the reference position so as to measure and adjust the linearity of a scanning beam, then the focusing lens of the optical system 100 is moved to adjust a focusing position. |
