The method cleans the face of a compact disc (4) with a pad (6) impregnated with a polishing paste. The pad and the compact disc face each other. Both the pad and the compact disc are rotated by electric motors (8,9) in opposite directions. The axes of rotation of the compact disc and the pad are offset from each other, so the relative motion is eccentric. The motors and rotating compact disc and pad are enclosed in a cover (10), with a switch positioned to interrupt the supply to the motors when the cover is opened. A timer is provided to automatically stop the polishing after a time set by the user. Cooling paths are provided to ventilate the motors.
