PURPOSE: To improve the orientation state of liquid crystals and to prevent the degradation in image quality by adding a specific temp. history to a liquid crystal element after liquid crystal injection and subjecting the element to a reorienttion treatment. CONSTITUTION: Ferroelectric liquid crystals 10, more preferably ferroelectric smectic liquid crystals having at least two stable states are held in the spacing between electrode substrates 1a and 1b. The reorientation stage of heating up the chiral smectic liquid crystal element P until the chiral smectic C phase of the chiral smectic liquid crystals turns to the cholesteric phase, then lowering the temp. thereof until the liquid crystals turn to the chiral smectic C phase is executed after the end of the liquid crystal injection stage. As a result, even if the chiral smectic liquid crystal element P is an element which is formed with auxiliary electrodes 5a, 5b on the surfaces of transparent electrodes 3a, 3b, is formed with ruggedness on the surfaces of orientation control films 7a, 7b and is subjected to the orientation treatment by subjecting the surfaces of these orientation control films 7a, 7b to a rubbing treatment, the orientation defects according to the ruggedness are eliminated. |
