A method for the automated arrangement of different sized objects on a defined surface in which the size and position of the objects are described by suitable values (coordinates). Starting from an initial given arrangement of the objects, a combinatorial optimisation of the arrangement of the objects is made, with the use of at least one cost function, in which only the arrangements which fulfill the constraints are allowed.
