The weighing involves delivering rod-like articles (2) between two parallel belt conveyors (6,7) to a region (1) in which a moving pile (8) is built up on a main conveyor (12) under a web (13). Deflection of the upper belt (19) over a defined length (28) is measured by a pick-up (29) wired to a computer (31) which obtains the total weight and number of articles. Another input to the computer is supplied by a light barrier involving a photoreceiver (34) facing a source (33) of light which is interrupted by the passage of each individual article between the parallel conveyors.
