A roving frame has flyers (3) with fingers which press against the entrainment region (5a) on the tubes (5) through centrifugal action. A control unit (7) controls the drive (9) automatically or on demand so that the flyers rotate at a first set speed which is lower than the sliver entrainment speed. The control unit (7) then causes the drive (9) to rotate the flyers (3) at a higher set speed to give automatic entrainment.
