A brake actuating mechanism, particularly for a walker, bicycle or another vehicle propelled by a person, has a frame or housing (110) with a pair of opposite side wall parts (119). Between these side wall parts, an actuating arm (111) and a braking arm (112) are pivotally arranged, the free end of the braking arm being connected with a tensioning wire (128), through which a tensile force may be transmitted to a braking device (not shown) which is thereby actuated. The actuating arm (128) has a head (115) which may be loosely inserted between the side wall parts of the frame and a control handle (116) projecting from the frame. The braking arm (112) has shaft studs (124) which may be inserted into tracks (122) in the side wall parts (119), and the free end part of the braking arm is fed through a passage in the head (115) of the actuating arm. On the braking arm behind the head (115), obstructing projections or pins (126) are arranged retaining the actuating arm (111) in its position inside the housing (110), and a resilient force transmittable through the tensioning wire (128) connected to the braking arm may serve to retain the braking arm in its position such that the shaft studs (124) are arranged at the bottom of the track (122). The brake actuating means may operate as a service brake when pivoting the control handle (116) in one direction and as a parking brake when pivoting the control handle in the other direction.
