The battery is mfd. by inserting the electrode plates and the separator plates in a battery casing before filling with sulphuric acid and a gelling agent, for forming a thixotropic electrolyte gel and subsequent sealing of the battery casing. The full amount of the sulphuric acid required for the battery electrolyte is filled in the battery casing after insertion of the electrode plates, with an aqueous silica salt with a solid component of between 15 and 60 % by weight added to obtain the required electrolyte solid conc. The contents of the electrolyte space are mixed homogenously by rotation of the battery, or by short-term overcharging of the battery to obtain a gas discharge.
