The seal has a base covering the mouth of the container and a side wall extending from the base. A free-standing elastically resilient circumferential sealing lip (5) is arranged to run at an acute angle to the base of esp. 60 to 70 deg. The thickness of the sealing lip should be larger than the clearance which is provided when deep drawing the closure edge between the inner wall of the plunger used for deep drawing and the outer wall of the container which is to be closed.
