A package comprises a U-shaped supporting element including a bottom wall 14 with flaps 20 and opposed side walls 15, 16 with edge flaps (numbers 21, 22 omitted) and top flaps 23, 24; and a U-shaped cover 33, 34, 35 disposed over the open top and sides of the supporting element and connected to its various flaps by adhesive. The supporting element is formed by folding a rigid, eg. cardboard, blank around the goods to be packaged such as a group of soft packs 11 and connecting overlapping regions 25 of the edge flaps (21, 22) and bottom flaps 20 by adhesive. Such folding may be done around a mandrel (47, Figure 3) in which the packs 11 are temporarily held. End tabs 26 of the top flaps 23, 24 may also be adhered to the edge flaps (21, 22). The cover 33, 34, 35 may be of a less stout material such as paper. The package is produced by moving the supporting element and goods together in a series of vertical and horizontal movements past or between folding members.
